Ichthyosis
Ichthyosis is a term for a group of rare genetic skin diseases characterized by excessive keratinization of the skin. The name comes from the Greek word “ichthys” – fish, because the skin of people suffering from this disease can resemble fish scales. The most common form is the so-called ichthyosis vulgaris, which appears in childhood and persists throughout life. The disease is not contagious, but has a chronic and lifelong course that requires regular care.
Causes of ichthyosis
The cause of ichthyosis is most often genetic – it is an inherited disease caused by a defect in the formation and shedding of skin cells. Healthy skin naturally renews itself, while dead cells are shed. In ichthyosis, this process does not work properly – cells accumulate on the surface of the skin, resulting in dry, scaly and thickened skin.
There are also acquired forms of the disease, which can be related to other health problems, such as thyroid disorders,
kidney disease or side effects of certain medications.
The incidence of ichthyosis
Ichthyosis most often appears on the forearms, shins, thighs and torso, but in more severe cases it can also affect the hands, feet, back or even the entire body. A typical sign of the disease is excessively dry, thickened and scaly skin, which is rough to the touch, tight and often prone to cracking, which is accompanied by pain.
Symptoms usually worsen during the winter months, when indoor air is dry and humidity in the environment is low – these are the conditions that are not very good for the skin.
